At Holy Cross, it is our intention for Physical Education (P.E.) and Sport to provide a practical and engaging curriculum which embeds the school values of Kindness, Confidence and Excellence, whilst applying these to sporting situations. The P.E. curriculum supports with the development of fundamental movement skills; promotes friendly competition in team games and allows pupils to compare their performances to previous ones on an individual basis, as they embrace the improvements they make in their ability and physical competence.

Our core aims and objectives are implemented in accordance with the national P.E. and Sport curriculum. Through our implementation of the curriculum, we aim to ensure that all pupils develop competence to excel in a range of physical activities and sports; can be physically active for sustained periods of time; embrace the opportunity to represent the school in competitive sports and lead healthy and active lifestyles.

In EYFS & KS1, pupils should be taught to:
  • Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.
  • Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
  • Perform dance using simple movement patterns.

In KS2, pupils should be taught to:
  • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination.
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
  • Perform dances using a range of movement patterns.
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Our school also provides swimming instruction in Key Stage 2, to contribute to the development of swimming proficiency amongst our pupils, prior to them leaving primary school and transitioning to secondary school. To achieve this, our pupils are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres; use a range of strokes effectively, including front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke; perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations, which is paramount, as a school based on the Isle of Wight.

The impact of P.E. and Sport at Holy Cross is evident, due to the physical development of pupils across all year groups; the range of competitive and non-competitive opportunities available to pupils both internally and externally and the subsequent success at sporting fixtures and events. To maintain inclusivity within P.E. and Sport, our school strives to promote confidence and leadership amongst our pupils, by encouraging them to lead their own sessions with peers, particularly during PEACH Games sessions. This coincides with us meeting the criteria and expectations of the Partnership for Education, Attainment and Children's Health (PEACH).
